Net-zero easier and cheaper with nuclear, says French grid operator

France can achieve its net-zero emissions target by 2050 through energy efficiency and electrification that would lead to a 35% increase in electricity demand, the French grid operator has said in a new report. Of the scenarios considered by Réseau de Transport d'Electricité, the cheapest implies constructing 14 large new nuclear power reactors, plus a fleet of small modular reactors, as well as significantly investing in renewables.

UK government earmarks funds for progressing nuclear project

The UK government has announced up to GBP1.7 billion (USD2.3 billion) in funding for a large-scale nuclear power plant in its autumn budget and spending review. It said it is in "active negotiations" with EDF over the Sizewell C project in Suffolk. The announcement comes days after the government introduced legislation for funding future nuclear power stations in the UK.

Inner dome installed at first Zhangzhou Hualong One

The inner safety dome was yesterday installed on the containment building of unit 1 of the Zhangzhou nuclear power plant in China's Fujian province, China National Nuclear Corporation has announced. Zhangzhou unit 1, the first of two Hualong One units at the site, is scheduled to enter commercial operation in 2024.

Nuclear profits sustain Bulgaria in gas crisis

Profits from Bulgaria's Kozloduy nuclear power plant are being redirected to provide subsidies of BGN110 (USD65) per MWh to industry. Some 630,000 industrial consumers will receive the benefit to protect them from power prices driven by gas.

Chernobyl waste facility nears operation

Final testing is underway at the facility which will receive, process and dispose of solid radioactive waste from the decommissioning of Chernobyl. "This is a very important event," said the acting director general of Chernobyl nuclear power plant, Valery Seyda. "The last 'long-term construction' at the site is finally moving towards completion."

Yellow Cake to make additional uranium purchases

London-quoted Yellow Cake plc has announced plans to buy a further 3 million pounds U3O8 (1154 tU), including 1 million pounds U3O8 from Kazatomprom in addition to that already covered in its option agreement with the Kazakh uranium producer. It also intends to buy some 2 million pounds of material sourced from CGN Global Uranium Limited.

UK government adopts new financing model for nuclear projects

The Nuclear Energy (Financing) Bill, which will use the Regulated Asset Base model to fund future nuclear power stations in the UK, has today been set out by the country's Business Secretary Kwasi Kwarteng. The new funding model is expected to attract a wider range of private investment into new nuclear power projects, cutting the cost of financing them and reducing the cost to consumers.

US Air Force confirms site for first microreactor

The US Air Force has confirmed the Eielson base in Alaska as the facility planned to host its first small nuclear power plant. A microreactor of up to 5 MWe could be operational there as soon as 2027, according to Eielson.
